Gor Mahia head coach Carlos Manuel Vaz Pinto has said that the defending Kenyan champions can build on their slim 1-0 win over Nairobi City Stars as they fight to the narrow the gap between them and league leaders Tusker FC.

Tusker is currently top on 37 points while Gor Mahia is 6th on 25 points.

Carlos Manuel vaz Pinto believes they can narrow the gap, but prefers to take a game at a time as the team prepares to take on Batoto Ba Mungu.

“I am happy with the win because it was not easy for the players to get back to action after stopping for almost two months and only training for two weeks. I am looking at what we did well and keeping a clean sheet was particularly impressive for me” he said.

The coach believes that his side should have bagged more goals after controlling the game well and getting many goal scoring opportunities.

“I think it was a tough game, the two teams played good football but I think we should have scored the second goal but we could not because our game was not easy,” he said.

“We controlled the game well but my problem was we had many opportunities to score the second goal but it never came and of course when we don’t score we need to fight for all the 90 minutes but I am happy for the win because we just came back after a long break” he added.

“I was impressed with my players because they managed to run a lot even after not being in group training for a long period but I know this team will grow together, if they train they will grow step by step and what need is to look at the next match (against Sofapaka) and win the match and think about our players and our team, that is the most important thing.”

Gor will next take on Sofapaka FC. The game will be played on Thursday at the Wundanyi Stadium in Taita Taveta.
