The construction of the ultramodern stadium Jomo Kenyatta International stadium at Mamboleo grounds in Kisumu is well and on as the new facility takes shape.

President Uhuru Kenyatta commissioned the multi-purpose Ksh 415 million facility during his tour of Kisumu County in October. The President ordered the contractor to finish the job withi n six months.

Sports Plug has accessed exclusive pictures of the 20,000- sitter stadium, which when complete will have a football pitch, basketball court, hockey pitch and tennis. The stadium will be used by all lake region counties.

Uhuru also delegated Interior CS Fred Matiang’i to ensure the road leading to the stadium is constructed to international standards.

He said the facility will provide the lake region youth will a platform to horn their footballing skills and play for international teams. According to Uhuru, Kisumu is the heartbeat of sports in Kenya.

The stadium is expected to be completed in April 2021 with the Mashemeji derby expected to be the first match at the facility. Uhuru had directed Senate Speaker Ken Lusaka to ensure AFC Leopards are ready to face Gor Mahia in the stadium.

When complete, it will be the second international stadium in Kisumu after Moi Internation stadium and will set the lakeside city one of the sports destinations in the country.
