Former Kenyan International and Montreal Impact captain Victor Wanyama is among the best paid players in Major League Soccer (MLS). This is according to the the biannual league-wide list of salaries released by the MLS Players Association last month.

Wanyama pockets $3.09 million (Ksh.361,657,640) in guaranteed compensation per year and has a base salary of $2,400,000 (Ksh.280,747,680). These figures make him the best paid player at his club CF Montreal. He is also the best paid midfielder in the MLS and ranks 14th on the Highest earners in MLS list of Spring 2022.

According to the MLS, Annual Average Guaranteed Compensation (Guaranteed Comp) number includes a player’s base salary and all signing and guaranteed bonuses annualized over the term of the player’s contract, including option years.

The Average Annual Guaranteed Compensation figure also includes any marketing bonus and any agent’s fees, both annualized over the term of the contract. The Average Annual Guaranteed Compensation figure does not include Performance Bonuses because there is no guarantee that the player will hit those bonuses.

These figures include compensation from each player’s contract with MLS. They do not include any compensation from any contracts with individual teams or their affiliates.

Shaqiri on Top!

Swiss International Xherdan Shaqiri is currently the best paid player in the MLS, making $8.15 million in guaranteed compensation. LA Galaxy’s Javier “Chicharto” Hernandez is the second highest paid player in the MLS, taking home $6 million in guaranteed compensation.

The Athletic has however reported that Italian international Lorenzo Insigne will soon replace Shaqiri as the top earner when he officially joins Toronto FC from Napoli in July. According to multiple sources, Insigne is set to earn a salary of roughly $15 million per year.
