Defending Kenya Premier League Champions Gor Mahia began their defence of the KPL title with a 5-2 win over rivals Tusker FC at the Moi Stadium in Kisumu.

Kogallo went ahead in the 26th minute courtesy of the red hot Nicholas Kipkurui. The former Zoo Kericho man won possession against Tusker’s Gabriel Wandera, raced into the box and fired a thunderbolt past keeper Robert Mboya. Kipkurui’s goal in Kisumu was his third against Tusker in the KPL.

Tusker got an equalizer in the 37th minute thanks to the talismanic Boniface Muchiri. The teams went into the break level on scores and it is in the second half where fans that thronged the Moi Stadium witnessed a rain of goals.

Gor Mahia took the lead through a contentious Kenneth Muguna Penalty in the 52nd minute after Gor Mahia’s Wellington Ochieng was brought down at the edge of the box. Tusker’s Robert Mboya blocked Muguna’s spot kick but the Gor Mahia captain managed to tap in the resulting rebound. According to the new FIFA rules, “There will be no rebounds from penalties. Play will stop for a restart if a penalty is saved or hits the pos,” Meaning there will be no chance to follow up and score from rebounds, meaning players will no longer need to line up on the edge of the area.

Well, the resulting goal was awarded to Gor Mahia but this will certainly raise debates across the football circles in the coming days. Tusker FC responded almost immediately with Boniface Muchiri again getting his name on the scoresheet with a great strike from outside the area to beat Keeper Mapigano who was out of position.

Momanyi gave Gor Mahia the lead again in the 68th minute after pouncing on a Kenneth Muguna free kick with a powerful header into the net.

Muguna then grabbed his brace in the 82nd minute after firing past Mboya following a good cut-back by Wellington.

With Gor Mahia already assured of a win heading into the last minutes of the game, Boniface Omondi lashed a shot into the Tusker net after a string of one-two passes from Miheso and Muguna. Muguna then sent a cross that Boniface fired for Kogallo’s fifth of the day. With that goal, Gor Mahia emerged resounding 5-2 winners over Tusker to all but kick off their League campaign on the right foot.

Gor Mahia will next take on Chemelil Sugar While Tusker FC will take on Mathare United.
