Just how did Gor Mahia miss out on their target John Makwatta in the last transfer window? All indicators showed that the former Ulinzi Stars man was headed to Kogallo only for him to end up at the den.

Well, AFC Leopards Chairman Dan Shikanda has revealed just how he managed to convince Makwatta to leave Gor at the ‘altar’ and go dine with them at the den.

In an interview with NTV, Shikanda stated that despite struggling financially at that point, he got honest with the former Buildcon FC man and told him just how Ingwe will be of value to him as he was also a big brand.

Gor had offered Makwatta Ksh2 million as sign on fee while Ingwe only had Ksh600,000.

“Makwatta was close to joining Gor Mahia, everything had been agreed on apart from signing the contract,” Shikanda told NTV.

“We were struggling financially so we could not give him a huge sign-on fee. Actually, Gor Mahia had given him KSh2 million in cash and we had just KSh600,000. So we had to find a way of getting him on board but not through money.

“I had to be honest with him; Leopards is a big brand in the country and I told him what the club can offer him in terms of value and publicity is far better than the cash he will be given. And that is how we managed to sign him, a move he has never regretted.”

Makwatta scored 13 goals for AFC Leopards but left for Zambian giants Zesco United in January.
