Algeria’s Africa Cup of Nations title defence campaign started with frustrations, after being held by little-known Sierra Leone.

Despite bossing a huge percentage of ball possesion, the Desert Foxes could not go past Sierra Leone shot stopper Mohammed Nbalie Kamara and debutant defender Steve Caulker, who came up massive to ensure their side picked up a morale boosting point.

Sierra Leone did not just defend but also caused massive danger whenever they had little of ball possesion.

Alhaji Camara had two clear chances for his side, but failed to utilize the cahnces. His first attempt a nice cross from Mustapha Bundu from the right corner went inches wide. Minutes later, he picked up the ball inside Algeria’s box after Bundu’s nice freekick, but his header went wide.

Just before the break, Sierra Leone had another chance when Mohamed Turay got on his wheels on the counter attack, but his shot was eventually saved by Rais Mbohli.

The Desert Foxes’ had most of the possession but they failed to earn something positive from it.

At the stroke of half time they almost got into the lead when an inviting ball from Riyad Mahrez fell on Islam Silimani, but Leone keeper Kamara, who was named man of the match, once again showed his patriotism.

In the second half, Algeria coach Djamel Belmadi made some oustanding changes but still did not worry Sierra Leone side.

The Desert Foxes will be desperate to make legal amends when they take on Equatorial Guinea next and Ivory Coast in their remaining group fixtures.

In the 67th minute, Bendeka had a chance to give Algeria the lead but debutant Stephen Caulker made a superb block to turn the ball inches wide after the substitute had picked up the ball at the backpost off a Youcef Bellaili cross.

In the dying minutes, West Ham United winger Said Benrahma should have given Algeria the lead when he was nicely picked up by a decent Youcef Attal cross but his volley went slightly wide.

At the brink of added minutes, Algeria’s Bounedjah was picked out by a corner unmarked, but his header went directly to the keeper.
