They say that problem is a chance for you to do your best and for former Harambee Stars defender Wesley Onguso, the ongoing covid-19 pandemic has presented him with an opportunity to venture into something new.
The former Gor Mahia man is currently a boda boda rider following the suspension of football due to the seemingly never ending coronavirus. Onguso who turns out for Nairobi City Stars helped his side secure KPL promotion and he is now out to secure the bag for himself.
A number of footballers in the country are having a hard time during this Covid-19 season as their clubs are unable to cater for their salaries. Despite the government coming up with a Covid-19 stimulus package for KPL players and different federations, many of them are still struggling to make ends meets. This has been worsened by the tough economic times currently being experienced in the Country.
Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed announced that fora period of three months, each player in 12 Kenyan Premier League clubs will receive a token of Sh10,000 as part of a Sh20 million COVID-19 stimulus package from the Sports Fund.
It is not yet clear whether Onguso is benefiting from this stimulus package or not as Nairobi City Stars had just been promoted to the KPL when the decision was arrived at.
The 2017 Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup winner with Harambee Stars is therefore out to earn that extra coin to sustain him and his family.
“I cannot sit home all day. There is no income. And I don’t like being idle,” he told Nation.
“I bought a motorbike, and I am now using it to make money to tend for my family. I make around Sh1,000 a day.”
With many Covid-19 cases already reported in Kawangware, Onguso is also helping in sensitization campaigns to help spread awareness among locals.
Apart from Gor, Onguso has also played for Sofapaka, Western Stima, Posta Rangers and Mathare United.
He will make a return to the Kenya Premier League with Nairobi City Stars following Football Kenya Federation’s decision to end the NSL and KPL. The move also saw Gor Mahia declared KPL Champions.
“Gor Mahia will be crowned, we will forward their name to Caf. There is no debate about these issues.”
“Nairobi City Stars and the second-placed team [Bidco United], will also be promoted,” Said Nick Mwendwa.
