Kisumu Day suffered a shocking opening day defeat to Vihiga’s Ebwali Secondary School in a Copa U19 group B match played at Moi Stadium in Kisumu on Tuesday evening.
The hosts were favorites heading into the game but they met a stubborn attack-minded side that stunned them in the closing minutes of the game picking maximum points from the game.
The match was largely balanced although Ebwali had the best chances of the game. James Isoboke fired the all-important goal seven minutes from time.
Both teams qualified for the nationals via appeals after losing in the regionals. Ebwali were handed a chance after St. Peters Mumias were found to have fielded an ineligible player. The same was the case for Kisumu Day who took Barding’s slot.
Ebwali were dominant in the game from the onset raiding the hosts in search of an early opener. Kevin Owalo’s attempt from a free kick in the 10th minute was blocked for a corner with Kisumu Day keeper well beaten.
The match slowly turned to an end to end affair with both teams looking to break the deadlock and earn the three points. The first half ended barren.
The second half was equally balanced with both teams increasing the tempo of the game, chances were, however, fewer apart with most of the action taking place in midfield.
Just like it looked like the game would end barren, Ebwali scored seven minutes from time through James Isaboke much to the delight of fans who were clearly not in support of the home team.
KD’s late long-balls approach yielded no fruits as Ebwali held on to claim maximum points.
