Arsenal could sack Unai Emery at the end of the season should they fail to qualify for the Champions League. This is according to club great Nigel Winterburn.

The Gunners missed out on a top four spot during the Spaniard’s first season at the club last time, but their former defender believes club chiefs won’t be so forgiving this time around.

He told Gambling.com: ”All clubs are looking and analysing what’s happening at their club.

“I’ve always said that when Unai Emery came in he would get at least two years. Last year it wasn’t his team.

“Now he’s had significant funds this season to make those changes.

“He’s brought in younger players which I agree with.

“But I would think that if Arsenal don’t get into the top four there will be a review.”

Winterburn, who made 440 league appearances for Arsenal between 1987 and 2000, has compared Emery’s tenure to that of Arsene Wenger’s, under whom he won two first division titles.

He added: ”They can’t get into the same position as with Arsene Wenger where 50 per cent of the supporters want him to stay and the other 50 per cent want him out.

“Every time something goes wrong on the pitch it’s almost as if the supporters are in crisis with each other.

“It wasn’t pleasant sitting and watching those games at the very end of Arsene’s reign.

“It was very uncomfortable as a former player to watch on from the sidelines.”

Ahead of tonight’s clash against Liverpool, Emery gave fans an update on the potential involvement of several first-team players, starting with Granit Xhaka.

“Tomorrow, for example, he’s not in the group,” the Spaniard said.

“I wasn’t thinking him for that match. He will stay here to train. We are going to first recover him as a person because now he’s down. Then we will think on the team.”

He added: “For example tomorrow David Luiz, Calum Chambers, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Granit Xhaka are not in the group. Some players aren’t in the group.”
