Kenya Premier League side Gor Mahia’s sponsorship deal with betting firm BetSafe continues to be the topic of discussion across sporting circles.

Kogallo signed a three year deal with BetSafe worth 55 million a year. The deal makes the betting firm the head and shirt sponsor for the record time KPL champions.

Apart from Gor, AFC Leopards also signed a 45 million a year sponsorship deal with the firm. Ingwe’s deal will also run for three years.

Both deals came at a time when the clubs were struggling to make ends meet. With pen now already put on paper, former Gor Mahia coach Hassan Oktay has welcomed the move to get a sponsor for his former side.

According to the KPL winning coach, the BetSafe deal will help motivate Gor Mahia players to perform even better. Referring to them as ‘fighters’, the Turkish Cypriot noted that with a sponsor now on board, players can concentrate on giving their all on the pitch without worries of what they will put on the table.

“The players have suffered a lot, they have really gone through tough times, playing football and you don’t get money afterwards is something very demoralising but I like all Gor Mahia players because they never liked to show they don’t have money.

“They are all fighters, they keep fighting for the team even without money and now they will be tougher because they have money and it means their problems have been sorted out” said Oktay as quoted by Goal.

The coach noted that with cash, players’ confidence and mentality will also be boosted.

Coach Oktay enjoyed a successful spell at Gor. Apart from winning the KPL title, he also guided the team to their first-ever quarter-final spot in the Caf Confederation Cup.
