Kenya Premier League Champions Gor Mahia have confirmed that they will be traveling to Sudan on Thursday.
Gor will then take on Sudan’s Al Hilal Club on Friday, 2nd in a friendly match.
“The team will be traveling to Sudan on Thursday, 1st August to play a friendly match against Al Hilal Club on Friday, 2nd August,” Read a Statement on Gor Mahia’s Social Media Page.
Previous reports indicated that Gor and Al Hilal were to face off in Nairobi but it now looks like there are change of plans by both parties.
Both teams are set to take part in next Season’s CAF Champions League with Gor Mahia taking on Aige Noir CS of Burundi in the Preliminary round.
Al Hilal will on the other hand take on Rwanda’s Rayon Sports.
Gor Mahia will fly to Sudan without head coach Hassan Oktay who travelled back to his country to take care of some family issues. It is not yet clear when the coach will return with many sources indicating that he might have found greener pastures elsewhere.
Oktay guided Gor Mahia to the Kenya Premier League title last season. He also guided them to the quarterfinals stage of the CAF Confederations Cup for the First time in the Club’s history.
Gor Mahia will be looking to break into the monied stage of the Champions League after narrowly missing out last season courtesy of the away goal rule.
Kogallo went down 0-2 against Nigeria’s Lobi Stars in Enugu, Nigeria. Gor had won the first leg of this first round tie 3-1 in Nairobi, but could not defend their two-goal margin, eventually crashing out on away goals rule after the teams tied 3-3 on aggregate.
Should Gor Mahia win their preliminary round against Aige Noir CS, they will meet either USM Algers of Algeria or Niger’s Sonidep in the second round.
