FKF Premier League side Gor Mahia has unveiled Portuegues coach Carlos Manuel Vaz Pinto as the club’s new head coach, taking over from Roberto Oliveira who left the club last month.
Pinto has previously coached St. George in Ethiopia, Club Libolo in Angola and Hearts of Oak of Ghana where he lasted for only seven days.
He also had a stint with FC Famalicao Under-23 side in his native Portugal where he won four out of 26 matches.
The good news for Gor Mahia fans is that Pinto holds Uefa Pro and Caf ‘A’ coaching licences. His predecessor Oliveira was banned from overseeing CAF matches over lack of these credentials.
It is till unclear who Gor Mahia will appoint as club assistant manager after Patrick Odhiambo left the club to take up a similar role at Bandari last week.
The Portuguese’s first assignment will be to prepare the team for the two legged CAF Confederations Cup play-off tie against Zambian side NAPSA Stars. A win will see the club qualify for the group stages of Africa’s secondary competition.
Gor fans will be hoping for nothing less than that, especially after seeing their team perform underwhelmingly in the Champions League, crashing out of the competition after an 8-1 aggregate loss to CR Belouizdad.
The new coach must also ready the team for their defence of the Premier league title. Gor are already behind schedule, having played only two matches in the league.
The Portuguese will watch from the stands when the club takes on Kariobangi Sharks in a league cup match on Sunday afternoon.
