Fast-rising Kenyan defender has been voted as the emerging star of the season by Swedish giants IF Elfsborg.
The award is in recognition of his efforts in helping the team finish second in the Swedish top tier and thereby qualifying for next season’s Europa League.
The 23-year-old was a mainstay in the team’s defence as they won 12 and lost only three matches in the season which concluded in November.
“Joseph Okumu presented as this year’s breakthrough in IF Elfsborg 2020,” the club said in a statement.
Reacting to the news, Okumu who is currently in Kenya for holidays, said it is an honour after an amazing season.
“It’s an honor, yesterday at the IF Elfsborg gala I was recognized and awarded the Breakthrough player for the 2020 season,” the defender said.
This was only his second year at the club he joined in August 2019 and the defender will hope for more accolades in the coming years.
The Kakamega High school alumni joined the Swedish giants after impressing at the 2019 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt where he played all the three group stage matches for Harambee Stars.
He has had stints at American sideReal Monarchs and Free State Stars in South Africa. Locally, Okumu played for Chemelil Sugar.
