Kisumu residents and lovers of sports from the Western region have a reason to smile. This is after Cabinet Secretary for Sports Amina Mohamed in the company of Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o laid foundation for the construction of a 20,000 seater state of the art stadium.
The famous Kisumu ASK Mamboleo ground has been renamed Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium and will undergo major renovations to help make it meet international standards.
Speaking during the ceremony, Governor Nyong’o stated that upcoming stadium was a clear testament of the National Government’s dedication to uplifting the sporting conditions in the country.
The governor also confirmed the change of name of the famous Jomo Kenyatta Sports Ground to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Sports Ground.
“I am a very happy man because when President Uhuru Kenyatta assured us that he will ensure his government builds at least one stadium in each county and today the Sports Minister is in Kisumu for the same purpose.
“We are here today to lay the foundation stone of the Jomo Kenyatta Internation Stadium. We will also move to the Jomo Kenyatta Stadium and change the name to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Sports Ground” said Nyong’o as quoted by Goal.
“Our main aim is to improve such facilities within Kisumu. I will make sure we will construct this stadium in the correct manner. We need to improve our facilities so as to have modern Hockey and Volleyball Courts as well as a football pitch'” he added..
The construction of the stadium will be financed by the world bank through the Kenya Sports Support Programme.
The county chief also confirmed that Moi Sports Stadium together with the Muhoroni Stadium will also get a face lift.
“Soon, we will also be upgrading the Moi Sports Stadium and those who doubt let them watch this space. I promised the Kisumu residents that we should improve the sports infrastructure in the county including the Muhoroni Stadium,” he said.
CS Amina said that the stadium will spur massive economic growth in and around the Lake Region Economic Bloc.
A number of Premier League sides like Gor Mahia, Western Stima and Kisumu All Stars have hosted their matches in Kisumu. With the new stadium now coming up, football fans from the area can expect more Premier League action in the area.
