Former Chemelil Sugar FC defender Joseph Okumu’s move to Swedish top tier side IF Elfsborg continues to excite a number of football fans in Kenya. Okumu’s move to Europe was expected following his Africa Cup of Nations Exploits in Egypt that saw him emerge as one of the top performers for Harambee Stars.

Okumu had many teams lining up for his precious signature but he opted to go to Sweden to follow in the footsteps of a number of Kenyan footballers who also ply their trade there.

Asked why he chose IF Elfsborg, Okumu says he was convinced with the project at the club and that the deal offered to him was too good to turn down.

“A number of teams in Europe had shown keen interest for my services but the moment I met with Elfsborg officials, I was convinced it was the best place for me to improve my career,” Said Okumu.

“[Elfsborg] is a big team in Sweden and they have a good history and also the league in Sweden always produces great players.

“It was a deal which no other player could have turned down and I really feel good to have signed the same. I already like the place and I want to keep working hard, keep learning more because I want to develop as a player.

“My main target now is to help the team grind out good results and I will always fight for the team to make sure they are fighting for top honours.”

Okumu will be following in the footsteps of striker Michael Olunga who turned out for Swedish top tier side Djurgårdens IF.

He will also link up with other Kenyans currently plying their trade in Sweden. Erick Ouma, Ochieng Ovella and Anthony Wambani turn out for Swedish third tier side Vasalund. Another Kenyan, Eric Johanna turns out for second tier side Bromma.
