Kenya Premier League side Nzoia Sugar Fc is set to get a team bus courtesy of Devolution Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa.
Nzoia Sugar will join the likes of Wazito FC, AFC Leopards ,Tusker FC and Kakamega Homeboyz in owning a team bus.
Wamalwa promised Nzoia Sugar FC a team bus back in 2017 during a visit to the Nzoia Sugar Factory for official duties. After the visit, he revealed he was a fan of the club and promised to get a bus for it through the help of other government officials.
The CS would later confirm that he had managed to raise close to Kshs.5 million for the purchase of the bus.
Nzoia has faced many challenges in the past and was among the teams that dished out a walkover in the League. The Sylvester Murukurwa led side gave a walkover to Bandari FC, a move that the club’s management blamed on fixture congestion.
Nzoia were forced to play three matches in a span of a week including a long trip to Mombasa. They returned home to host Chemelil before hitting the road again for the match against Sofapaka in Nairobi. The move ultimately worked against the team’s budget and were left with no option but to give free points to Bandari.
With the team’s sponsor, Nzoia Sugar not in a good position financially, the Bungoma based side has had unending challenges that have even seen players go for several months without salaries.
Nzoia Sugar FC is among a number of KPL clubs currently benefiting from the ministry of sports Covid 19-package that sees players get Kshs.10,000 for 3 months.
With the new team bus set to be handed over to the team, there is hope at the side that has been hailed for producing top talents in the Kenyan football scene. They include: Elvis Rupia, Lawrence Juma, Bonface Omondi, Jack Ochieng’ and Elvis Ronack.
Nzoia Sugar Football Club was formed in the year 1978 and joined the Kenyan Premier League in the year 1979. The team won the league title in the years 2002 and 2003.
The team also managed to make their 1st appearance in the CAF Champions League in 2003 but were eliminated in the 1st Round by Egyptian giants Zamalek FC in a two legged tie losing 7-3 on aggregate.
The team finished 15th in the KPL last season and is set to be part of the League again next season.
