After a long time of speculation swirling all around about what should happen with October’s Classico clash, the RFEF’s competition committee has reached a conclusion to the benefit of both sides.

The committee has pushed the clash which was slated for 26 October to 18 December, according to Spanish outlet, El Larguero. The postponement comes in the wake of gruelling political unrest in Catalunya. The tension was sparked by the arrest of nine Catalan political leaders on Monday for between nine and 13 years, for their part in the controversial independence referendum in 2017.

The Catalan Football Federation suspended all matches in the region on Monday, although that ruling does not affect La Liga matches or the Spanish national team.

It was earlier reported that La Liga’s request to switch the match from the Camp Nou to the Santiago Bernabeu was met by rejection with Barca President Josep Bartomeu leading the rally for rescheduling.

El Classico is a famous name given in football to any match involving age-long rivals Barcelona and Real Madrid.
