Harambee Stars striker Micheal Olunga has been named the August player of the month in the Japanese J2 League. Olunga has enjoyed a productive month while playing for his club, Kashiwa Reysol.

The lanky striker found the net six times in six league matches in August including a hat-trick against Renofa Yamaguchi on August 10.

The former Thika United and Gor Mahia striker’s goals have helped Kashiwa Reysol maintain top spot in the Japanese second-tier league with 62 points, Seven above second-placed Yokohama.

Upon receiving the award, Olunga was his usual humble self and promised to continue working hard.

”I am happy to be elected August player of the month. I would like to thank God Almighty for His blessings. Without you, it wouldn’t be possible. My teammates, my supporters and everyone who believes in me, I am truly thankful
All I can do is to continue working hard and pray for better tidings in the future. GOD ABOVE ALL,” he said.

It has been a wonderful month for Olunga who also got to Skipper Harambee Stars for the first time in his career when the team played in a friendly match against Uganda Cranes at the Moi International Sports Center at Kasarani.

At only 25 years of age, Micheal Olunga is vastly experienced. He won the Kenya Premier title unbeaten with Gor Mahia in 2015 and was the league’s highest scorer with 19 goals.

His fine form earned him a move to Swedish side Djurgarden where he continued with his goal-scoring prowess and later made history by becoming the first Kenyan to play in the Spanish La Liga when he joined Catalan side Girona FC in 2018.

He would then make more history in Spain after his 22-minute hattrick earned him the accolade of becoming the first Girona player to score a La Liga hat-trick.

Micheal Olunga’s next match will be this Saturday when Kashiwa Reysol travels to face Ventforet Kofu on Saturday, September 14.
