Turkey and Kanyaspor star Ahmet Yilmaz Calik killed in a horror car crash on Tuesday morning.
Ahmet Calik was driving on the motorway when he lost control and crashed around 9am on Tuesday morning. It is understood his car overturned as it came off the carriageway.
Emergency services rushed to the accident scene but Calik was pronounced dead at the scene in heart-breaking and emotional circumstances.
The 27-year-old earned 8 caps for Turkey between 2015 and 2017 after his stance with the youth teams, although he did not appear at the 2016 EURO despite being named in the squad.
The defender was playing his professional club football with Kanyaspor until his tragic demise, joining the Super Lig side in 2020 from Galatasaray.
Kanyaspor Tweeted a heartfelt and comfort message of support for their centre-back: “We are deeply saddened by the loss of our football player Ahmet Calik, who has won the love of our fans and our city since the first day he came to our Konyaspor.
“Condolences to all of us, especially to the family of our football player Ahmet Calik.”
Turkey’s youth and sports minister Mehmet Muharrem Kasapoglu also said: “I have learned with deep regret that our national football player Ahmet Calik, who plays for Konyaspor, passed away in a traffic accident on the Ankara-Nigde highway.
“May God have mercy on the late Ahmet Calik, who also served in our national team.
“My condolences to his family, Konyaspor and the entire football community.”
Galatasaray as well as the Turkish national team together with Calik’s first club Genclerbirligi also prevailed their posts paying tribute to the late.
Calik joined Genclerbirligi’s academy in 2005 at the age 0f 11 and made his senior debut with his boyhood club in 2011.
The 27-year-old went on to make 109 league appearances for them in six years before leaving for Galatasaray and later Konyaspor where he signed with them a contract extension in November 2021.
Konyaspor currently sit second in the Super Lig, ten points shy behind leaders Trabzonspor.
Calik played the full 90 minutes of Sunday’s 1-0 defeat to Sivasspor.
